Labiaplasty in Washington, DC

Dr. Yousefi offers labiaplasty for patients in Washington, DC, Vienna, Arlington and surrounding areas of Northern Virginia.

Life events such as childbirth and aging, and medical conditions such as vaginal atresia, (an absent vaginal passage), Mullerian agenesis (a malformed uterus and fallopian tubes), or intersex conditions may leave many women unhappy with the size, color, shape or the overall appearance of their labia. Some women experience extreme irritation while wearing certain types of clothing and others may experience discomfort while playing sports, exercising or performing some type of activity.

A labiaplasty can help eliminate the physical discomfort or unsightly appearance that can cause these women to feel not normal. In consultation with the patient, Dr. Yousefi can design an individualized treatment plan that will meet the patient’s needs and desires and help them to feel more comfortable about their overall physical appearance.

What is Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty — also referred to as labioplasty, labia minora reduction or labial reduction — is a plastic surgery procedure that alters the labia minora, or the inner labia, and the labia majora, or the outer labia. These are the folds of the skin that surround the human vulva. Many women who suffer from congenital conditions such as intersex and those who are simply displeased with the labia’s appearance or suffer labia discomfort may opt to undergo this type of procedure to help make them feel more attractive.

How is a Labiaplasty Performed?

A typical labiaplasty takes about one to two hours while the patient is under local anesthesia.

A common approach used for this surgery is the simple removal of the leading edge of the labia, which will reduce its size. The edge is then repaired.

Another, more sophisticated method is called the “V” Wedge technique, which helps preserve the color and overall anatomy of the labia edge. Dr. Yousefi will remove the excess labia in a “V” manner and then suture the upper and lower edges together. The only suture line visible on the edge is a small slanted line, which significantly decreases the discomfort from the procedure and the visibility of having undergone the surgery.

What Can I Expect After a Labiaplasty?

Patients will likely experience some discomfort and swelling at the surgical site for the first few days. This will gradually improve. Patients are sent home with written instructions, antibiotics and medication for pain and should expect to be completely healed in about six weeks. All sutures are absorbable and will not need to be removed.

A series of post-operative visits will need to be scheduled to ensure that everything is healing properly. Most patients can expect to return to work in two to four days following surgery.

Exercise can usually be resumed at four weeks following the procedure; sexual activity may resume after six to eight weeks.
