What are my Options for Lip Augmentation in Washington, DC?
There are other ways of enlarging the lips besides the use of your own fat or synthetic filler materials. These procedures are not done that often, simply because of the ease of performing the fat injection and the short recovery period of other injectable fillers. You can use part of your own skin and shape it and using multiple small incisions place it in the lips. Synthetic materials like Alloderm have also been used for this purpose. Synthetic implants can be used, but they may not give a natural feel to the lips.
Surgical removal of the tissue from upper and/or lower lips can be performed in order to give a smaller appearance to the large lips. An incision is made inside the mouth in the lips, and enough tissue is removed to create a more balanced look. The incisions are then closed using absorbable sutures.
Fat injection is used to plump out the lips and the furrows on either side of the upper lip. Fat injections will usually last up to 6 months. Additional injections may allow you to achieve a result that lasts up to several years. The fat is removed from one area of the body such as the buttocks, and then used for the lip injection.
This procedure involves injecting the lip with a "filler,” either Restylane®, Juvederm®, Perlane , or less commonly Radiesse. Most of these materials consist of a stabilized hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance already present in your body. All of these fillers are eventually absorbed by the body and therefore the procedure has to be repeated at least every six to nine months. These can also be used on the corners of the mouth.
